The Astroboy is the alias of Portuguese musician Luís Fernandes, member of the PAD artist collective and judging from the few cuts I got sent one of the most interesting drone musicians to come from Europe in recent years. His forthcoming full-length The Chromium Fence is already his third album after A derrota da engrenagem in 2007 and 090309 from two years ago. Building complex arrangements of layered patterns generated through analog synthesis and digital manipulations, The Astroboy’s heavy drones create a very contemplative yet demanding ambient feel, indeed not unlike Emeralds or other exponents of the recent wave of synth minimalism.
