Premiere: Birthdays – “Pizza Baby”.

Recently profiled and contextualized FMLY fellow (that’s a lovely bunch of them above) Sam Yager aka Birthdays returns with some pretty weird yet seriously awesome stuff to give a first appetizer of things to come as the dude is back in the studio (i.e. bedroom) to record his next full-length. Now Birthdays has never been the straight type of project, but Pizza Baby is curious even by that measure with its mellow, almost melancholic e-piano line and slow, restrained percussion that provide the unlikely backdrop for Yager’s heavily manipulated voice. Oh yeah and I think the tune closes with “Let’s talk about silence/Let’s talk about islands” which is, if I’m right, the line of the year.
