Jerusalem and the Starbaskets.

31 Mar 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Minneapolis, Minnesota's De Stijl Records is more and more becoming one of my favorite labels, dropping gems like it's no one's business lately. The fine folks are about to release the first proper full-length by Jerusalem and the Starbaskets, a very decent psych outfit made up of Columbia, Missouri via Memphis songwriter Jeremy Freeze and Kim Sherman. First single Walkin' Across Your Grave is an excellent teaser for DOST, heavily distorted guitar noise setting in after a few bars, rising over the course of the three and a half minutes until it eventually drowns Freeze's vocals. Perfect, very late 60s-induced psychedelic pop. Video: AyGeeTee - “Tame Exchange/Shit Fight”.

31 Mar 2011 — Henning Lahmann
I've already put this on our tumblr yesterday, but the sheer beauty of combining our boy AyGeeTee's electronics with the otherworldly ethereal visuals of Camilla Padgit-Coles' (of Future Shuttle) video works demands at least a little feature here on NFOP. Watch out for AyGeeTee's debut LP, due next month on AMDISCS. Yojimbo Billions: “Return To Rama”.

31 Mar 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Phoenix, Arizona master of all dark and twisted beats Zach Vogt aka Yojimbo Billions shared this brand new tune with us yesterday, the first from an upcoming EP rather mysteriously named Ysalamiri 95 which is currently in the works. Return To Rama is the "sequel" to the amazing track Rendezvous With Rama from last year's Sunburn EP that we had featured back in January, and it's just another example of Vogt's incredible approach to screwed electronica. Trust: “Candy Walls”.

30 Mar 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Tremendously gloomy yet seriously beautiful dark synth pop here by Toronto, Ontario male/female duo Trust, consisting of Robert Alfons and Maya Postepski, according to their label "born out of desperation in the brutal Canadian winter of 2009". Standing on the shoulders of all cold wave giants, Candy Walls is the eerie a-side of the outfit's debuting 7 inch, available now and fittingly put out by Brooklyn's Sacred Bones Records. Order here. Tough Love Sampler: Young & Research II.

30 Mar 2011 — Henning Lahmann
London's swell Tough Love Records have released the second installment of their Young & Research sampler series today, featuring "a gamut of friends, family, old flames and future lovers". We're particularly overwhelmed by the fragile beauty of NFOP fav Lonely Galaxy's brand new tune Strawberry Adore and the nice garage sounds of Belfast outfit Girls Names (who have their debut LP Dead To Me out in April via Tough Love in the UK/Europe and Slumberland in the US), but the rest of the 13 song compilation is a joyful listen as well. Download the whole thing for free over here. M. Pyres: “Two Fists (For Myrtle)”.

30 Mar 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Fort Collins, Colorado imprint Patient Sounds CEO Matthew Sage has dropped another little tune under his M. Pyres moniker, "not from an upcoming album, just a little jammer for fun". It's the last song to be recorded at Sage's old house in Fort Collins' Myrtle Street, "a goodbye song for a strange house in the same old town": Stay in your hometown Staring at the atlas Hanging on the wall Over my bed I'm over where I dream Staring at my hometown On another atlas Hung on your new wall The point the place I miss. Moths: “Summer”.

30 Mar 2011 — Henning Lahmann
Summer still feels ages away, but here's a nice little teaser brought to you by Ireland's 17 year old rising chop'n'screw talent Jack Colleran aka Moths. Sometime back in early 2010, someone might have called this "chillwave", but we're more than happy to eventually leave this misguided labeling alone for good and confine ourselves to telling you that this lil gem really is evoking some lush and easy summery feelings in our hearts. Premiere: Raw Thrills: “My Life Was in Chains”.

29 Mar 2011 — Henning Lahmann
After last month's utterly brilliant Shakedown LP (see here) and the upcoming 7 inch Freak Funk Boy under his Greatest Hits moniker (see here), Brooklyn's principal wunderkind Zak Mering aka Raw Thrills already has another recording to be dropped soon via Sixteen Tambourines. Raw Thrills and his Chain Gang is a 13 track collection of "mostly covers and stuff", including songs with illustrious names such as Mrs. Robinson, Sunshine After the Rain, or Sweets For My Sweet. But as we have been shown before, Mering's reinterpretations of all-time classics are way more than mere apprentice pieces or simple pastime. In fact, his cover of Harry Nilsson's Without Her, featured on the recent So Post cassette, is without doubt one of my favorite Raw Thrills jams. The below premiered My Life Was in Chains, however, is an entirely new song by Mering. Featuring Zak's Sweethearts partner in crime Sam Mehran aka Outer Limits Recordings etc. on guitar, the tune is just another example of Mering's boundless talent for the perfect pop song, filled with his sweet voice and sugarcoated with sampled, nicely off-kilter and skewed strings that leaves us jamming through the early spring sunshine. Raw Thrills and his Chain Gang comes in a strictly limited edition of only 60 tapes, so don't hesitate and pre-order over here Raw Thrills - My Life Was in Chains Oh, and the gorgeous artwork above was done by our very much adored Teresa of Relentless Noisemaker together with Mering.
